Knitting in Round

Hats? Mitts? Socks? Anyone? This class is for those of you who can already cast on, knit and purl and are now ready to delve into knitting in the round. In this 2 hours class we'll take the mystery out of knitting on double pointed needles and introduce you to the various ways of knitting in the round! Get ready for tips and tricks for gaining control over what looks like unwieldy pointy sticks and joining without twisting things into a mobieus (if you are not trying to achieve the mobieus twist) and look forward to a whole new adventure in knitting!

Knitting Project Class -- Tackle something new with guidance!

Wednesdays, September 8, 15, 22, 29, & October 6; 7:00-9:00pm

This 5 week session (10 hours total) will guide you through your own knitting project, whether you're a new knitter tackling your first sweater, or an experienced knitter tackling a challenge. Come prepared with at least one choice of what you would like to tackle and we'll help you with yarn choices, and teach you all the skills you need to create it, from understanding the instructions and checking your gauge to casting on and off and putting it together. Students will receive a 15% discount for project class yarn purchases.

Reading Knitting Patterns

Saturday, October 16; 1:00-3:00pm

This 2 hour session will help illuminate the mysteries of the knitting pattern.  We'll focus on helping you translate written instructions and charts into something you can actually do with yarn and needles.  Topics covered will include common abbreviations, reading charts, frequently-used conventions and shortcuts.  We'll also discuss how to analyze a pattern to learn more about the garment before you start knitting it.  And last but not least, we'll discuss common pitfalls when working a pattern and how to avoid them.

Knit Socks 101

In this two session class: be introduced into the addictive and wonderful world of sock knitting! You will learn the finer points of sock anatomy and create a small trainer sock to ensure you have the techniques down pat, and then you will learn to create a custom sock built perfectly to your specifications to keep your toes warm on these chilly winter days.

Skills required: Knit & Purl, Cast On/Off, experience knitting in the round is recommended

Now that you've knitted a few socks, it's time to expand your skills a bit. We'll cover a number of sock-related topics: different types of heel turns and different types of toe shapings, and how you can use them to improve the fit of yours. Learn about the differences between toe-up and top-down, and how to convert between the two. Try magic loop, working on two circular needles, and knitting two socks at once. And we'll talk about designing your own patterned socks, and how to apply pattern stitches to plain socks and of course we'll share pointers on common mistakes and trouble spots in sock knitting, and how to avoid them. (Gusset holes, anyone?)

There are 3 different ways to knit socks: on double-pointed needles, with magic loop or with two circulars; you can also go toe-up or top-down. This class shows you how to use all three needle types - and lets you practice to figure out which you prefer. And we show you how to work a pattern written for one needle type on another. We'll also explain the top-down vs. toe-up constructions, discuss pros and cons of each, and provide expert socky tips & techniques, no matter which way you like to go!

Colourwork 101

You've mastered stripes, and now you're ready for something a bit more sophisticated.  This 2 hour session will teach you all the skills you need to tackle colourwork, both Fair Isle and Intarsia.  We'll explain the difference between the two, and how to work them both.  We'll teach you how to read and interpret the patterns and charts, and share tips and techniques for working with more than one colour at a time - including the magic of 2-handed stranding.

Knitters have a great range of photographic subjects available; from stash, to WIPs, to FOs, to the tools of our trade. Learn how to improve your photographic skills by using light, perspective, and composition. We'll spend the first hour talking about concepts and looking at examples. Then, use your camera to experiment and play while learning hands-on how to improve your work.

WTF!?! What's The Fault-- Your Fixing Mistakes Guide

Oh no! Something’s wrong with your knitting? What’s the fault?! This 2 hour session will teach you how to spot and fix mistakes in your knitting, whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned knitter. We will share tips for safely ripping out stitches and rows, for fixing mistakes without ripping out, and for deciding when you don’t need to bother fixing at all.

Crochet For Knitters

Crochet is an incredibly useful skill for the knitter.  This 2 hour session teaches you how to bring the power of the crochet hook to your knitting -- to pick up dropped stitches and fix mistakes, for painless seaming, for creating decorative edgings and joins, and for the mysterious and wonderful provisional cast-on.
